Audubon's Shearwater

Located at the northern end of the Exuma Cays, the Allan's Cays IBA is located between Ship Channel Cay and Highbourne Cay. It is comprised of three small cays, namely Allan’s Cay, Southwest Allan’s Cay, and Leaf Cay. The IBA includes marine areas up to one kilometer from the cays.

The habitat on the Cays includes honeycomb limestone rock, sandy shores, and shrubland.

Primary Species Commonly Experienced Here

The rocky cliffs on Allan’s Cay support a regionally significant colony of Audubon’s Shearwater Puffinus lherminieri.

Best Times and Seasons for Viewing

Species can be seen throughout the day. However, higher concentrations of bird species can be seen during the morning hours or late afternoon.

Access Considerations and Directions

The Cays can be accessed by boat from mainland Exuma; the journey might not be suitable for persons who are physically handicapped or in wheelchairs because of the small boats used to get there.
