Junkanoo Rush-out
|

Description of Event

This party is a quaint daylong celebrate where residents of Ragged Island gather with visiting yachters and friends. It takes place every year around Valentine's Day in a cove on the western-side of Hog Cay.

Festivities begin with a traditional Junkanoo rush-out, lead by the students of the Ragged Island All Age School, yachters, and others, along a short stretch of the beach. Food and Drinks (alcohol included) are provided by both parties in a pot-luck style. Native Bahamian and American dishes are served, there's an open bar, and various desserts to satisfy the appetite. There is also swimming, music, and dancing.

The Annual Yachters' Auction takes place in the evening as residents lobby for the best treasures and keepsakes, proceeds of which are donated to the local school. But the party doesn't end there. As night approaches, a bonfire is lit, guitars begin to play, drums begin to beat, and voices begin singing favorite lullabies, as friends say their goodbyes.
