The settlement of Cockburn Town (pronounced Koburn Town), located on the island's tranquil west coast, is the capital of San Salvador and its largest settlement. It is the center of all activities on the island, and houses the airport, Administrator's office, Post Office, clinic, telecommunication station, and electricity generators.

At the entrance to the town, there is a huge almond tree that has withstood the force of severe hurricanes over the years. It is a prominent landmark and a favorite gathering place for locals, who refer to it as "the lazy tree or the local court." Other places of interest here include old buildings from the 1800s (including the old jail), the island museum, restaurants and bars, hotels and a marina, plus churches representing several denominations.

History

Cockburn Town was named for the late Sir Francis Cockburn, who was Royal Governor and Commander-in-Chief of The Bahamas from 1837 to 1844. He is said to have been the first governor of the country to visit the island.
