Diamond Crystal & Salt Flats

5 Thumbs Up! Give your thumbs up.

Apart from remnants of the old salt plant and the flats, this 25,000-acre site includes almost 20 miles of the island's coastline, with incredible beaches and turquoise water. It is a great spot for fishing, picnicking, and sightings of water fowl.

History of Area

In the 1970's, Diamond Crystal opened an extensive salt plant west of the town named Hard Bargain. There was also an operational air strip and buildings that housed workers who were not residents. The factory closed in 1982, reportedly due to its main plant in the United States filing for bankruptcy. Many Long Islanders have stories to tell about the salt plant, where the majority of Bahamians who wanted to work were employed at the time.

After the salt plant closed, a shrimp farming company called Worldwide Protein (Bahamas) Ltd. moved in, only to close a few years later.

Acessibility Notes

The bridge providing access to the site and beach by land was destroyed during Hurricane Joaquin in October 2015, so you can only visit by boat.
