As implied, this area derived its name from the wells which were dug by French pirates who used this area as a hideout during the years of piracy. It was a convenient location for them because the channel at French Wells was sheltered by the cays between Long Cay and Crooked Island, and by the shallow flats of the Bight of Acklins. This allowed the ships to remain hidden and attack the merchant ships using the Crooked Island Passage.

To protect shipping and minimize the continued threat of piracy, the British established a fort at Gun Point. As you approach French Wells, you will find remains of fortifications near the shoreline including an old cannon.
