The Gerace Research Center (GRC), formerly the Bahamian Field Station, occupies an old U.S. Navy base at Graham's Harbour on San Salvador's northern coast. It has been in operation since 1971 as a center for academic research in the areas of archaeology, biology, geology and marine sciences. It provides accommodations and air transportation for researchers from around the world and professors who wish to teach their students in this unique environment.

Locally, the Center supports the community by providing potable drinking water and other necessities. Also, it assists with sustainable efforts to protect indigenous species such as sheltering the remaining few critically endangered San Salvador Rock Iguanas.

Accomplishments

Formerly known as the Bahamian Field Station, the Gerace Research Center occupies a former US Naval Base, and has been in operation for over 40 years as an educational and research institution. The Gerace Research Centre provides accommodations, laboratory space, and logistical support for both teachers and researchers interested in the diverse and unique tropical environments available on San Salvador.

The Gerace Research Center has enjoyed a long and rich history as a field based classroom for a variety of sciences. Geology courses make use of Pleistocene and modern carbonate environments in teaching sedimentology, stratigraphy, paleontology, and field mapping. Biology and Ecology classes make use of the many varied habitats including hypersaline lakes, shrub-covered terrestrial settings, rocky keys, sea grass beds, mangroves, and coral reefs. Increasingly molecular biology and genetics has become common with groups examining oyster and fire coral populations. Archaeology classes focus on both prehistoric and historic sites for which full Bahamian Government approval has been received.

While the sciences have traditionally been the focus of groups visiting the Gerace Research Center, art classes and literature classes have also recently been taught, with the tropical scenery and rich Bahamian culture providing the focus.

How to Support

The GRC has always been able to count on supporters to help fill in the blanks, so that they can continue to keep their fees low. Here's how you can help:

  • GRC Buy a Brick program.
  • Tax deductible donation of cash or goods via the BECS Foundation.

The Bahamas Education, Culture, and Science Foundation, BECS, was founded to support organizations and institutions in The Bahamas that are involved in tertiary education, cultural endeavors, and scientific research. The BECS Foundation was incorporated as a not-for-profit foundation in the State of Florida in 2003, and has full approval from the IRS as a 401c3 tax-free organization. Donations from organizations and individuals in the U.S. to the GRC made through the BECS Foundation are tax deductible. For more information, please email Kathy Gerace.
