Thick-Billed Vireo

Located on mainland Great Exuma, the Grog Pond IBA is an inland wetland with shallow, brackish water.  The habitat includes black mangroves, buttonwood, and coppice. 

Primary Species Commonly Experienced Here

The Grog Pond IBA supports a large population of the Vulnerable West Indian Whistling-duck Dendrocygna arborea and the Near Threatened White-crowned Pigeon Patagioenas leucocephala. The IBA also consists of  Laughing Gull Larus atricilla, Gull-billed Tern Sterna nilotica, Least Tern S. antillarum, Bahama Mockingbird Mimus gundlachii, and Thickbilled Vireo Vireo crassirostris


Best Times and Seasons for Viewing

Species can be seen throughout the day. However, higher concentrations of bird species can be seen during the morning hours or late afternoon.

Access Considerations and Directions

Grog Pond can be accessed by vehicular transportation on mainland Exuma. Persons with mobility impairments should have no difficulty moving around within the settlements.
