High Rock gets its name from the high rocky bluff located between the coastal road and the sea. Homes in this small community are mostly wooden framed buildings, but the structure that stands out is a candy-striped lighthouse built by a local minister across the street from his chapel. Some villagers here fish for a living, others work in Freeport or at the nearby Statoil terminal located just east of the community.

You can relax in seclusion on 14 miles of pristine white sand beach, with crystal-clear blue water that is ideal for activities like kayaking and snorkeling. Nearby are virgin flats where bonefish are plentiful; experienced bonefish guides at the lodges can assist you in luring them.

History

The main occupations here in the past were fishing and sponging. Sponging was hard work though, with little reward; villagers had to walk several miles through the pine forest in order to get to the north shore where the sponge beds were. With the establishment of the missile base, Burma Oil, and the city of Freeport, they had better options and welcomed prosperity.
