Name of Person: Mr. Kenneth Whitfield

Introduction

Master woodcarver, Kenny Whitfield, was born and raised on San Salvador, living in the settlement of Sugar Loaf.

He learned his craft from the late great woodcarver, Mr. Wilfred Baptiste, whose Coat of Arms still hangs in Government House, Nassau. Kenny has been practicing his craft for a number of years, and creates works of art inspired by the wildlife of San Salvador. He is now the last of a great legacy of woodcarvers on San Salvador, and his pieces have been sold in The Bahamas, Canada, Europe, and the United States.

Kenny can create all sizes of sculpture but to ensure that you can travel and get your handcrafted item home, most of his work is made for ease of travel.

Full Explanation

Woodcarving has always been a part of The Bahamas and San Salvador, and like the Straw Craft industry, it is now a dying art.

Kenny Whitfield truly brings wood to life with one-of-a-kind items made just for you. Specializing in the marine life of San Salvador, Kenny creates personalized souvenirs that are a constant reminder of your stay in The Bahamas. His work consists of everything from blue marlins to hammerhead sharks, and from dolphins to a coral reef complete with fish.

He uses only hand tools (chisels, C-gouges, mallets and sandpaper) and a variety of local woods: the two-toned horse flesh and wild tamarind, Lignum Vitae, yellow wood, and mahogany. Upon completion, items are then given a protective finish with varnish or polyurethane.
