White Tailed Tropic Bird

The North Atlantic Abaco Cays IBA includes all of the cays along the northern and northeastern edge of the Little Bahama Bank, inclusive of Walker's Cay National Park, Scotland, Pensacola, Spanish, Powell, Manjack, Green Turtle, Whale, and Great Guana Cays. Many of these cays are uninhabited.

Primary Species Commonly Experienced Here

This IBA supports a significant number of seabirds. There are breeding populations of Laughing Gull Larus atricilla, Roseate Tern Sterna dougallii, Least Tern S. antillarum, and Bridled Tern S. anaethetus located within these cays.

Other species found on these cays include Audubon’s Shearwater Puffinus lherminieri, White-tailed Tropicbird Phaethon lepturus, Magnificent Frigatebird Fregata magnificens, Brown Pelican Pelecanus occidentalis, Sooty Tern S. fuscata, Brown Noddy Anous stolidus, and the Brown Booby Sula leucogaster.

Access Considerations and Directions

The cays can be accessed by boat from mainland Abaco. Green Turtle Cay can be accessed from the Green Turtle Ferry Terminal located in Treasure Cay, Abaco.
