Run for Pompey

31 Thumbs Up! Give your thumbs up.

Event Dates: November 09, 2019

About this Event

This annual charity run pays tribute to 32-year-old Pompey, the courageous slave who helped shape The Bahamas' history. He was one of the country's first national heroes, which is why the initial run was held on the weekend before National Heroes Day, the second Monday in October, to commemorate him.

After meeting in Nassau with James Carmichael Smythe, then Governor of The Bahamas, Pompey returned to Exuma. The run happened after that, in late June 1830, from Steventon to Rolle Town (approximately 55 miles). His goal was to warn the slaves that they were coming to search their houses.

Other festivities during the weekend will include a celebration of Bahamian history, culture, and sport. If you are interested you can also partake in the pasta party which will be held at Grand Isle 23 North Beach Club on November 9th, 2019 for a fee of $45 which is inclusive of all taxes and fees and includes complimentary non-alcoholic beverage. All registration Proceeds from this Charity Run will go towards an annual Scholarship Fund called the Pompey Fund which will be awarded to a deserving student at graduation each year.
