Simms is the main and oldest settlement in north Long Island. It is home to descendants of the original settlers, and is well known for the straw creations of the late Miss Ivy Simms, who was renowned for fine, native straw work. She established a small factory in the Simms settlement, where she and her staff produced finely-made straw bags, baskets, hats, and other articles.
Today, there are still many persons here specializing in the art of straw plaiting, and you can purchase one-of-a-kind straw pieces, such as dolls and Christmas ornaments.
