This IBA includes the settlements between Tarpum Bay and Winding Bay. The habitats contained within these settlements include broadleaf coppice, shrubland, coastal coppice, and sandy shore.

 

Primary Species Commonly Experienced Here

The South Tarpum Bay IBA supports the largest known concentration of wintering Near Threatened Kirtland’s Warbler Dendroica kirtlandii.

Other bird species found within this IBA include White-crowned Pigeon Patagioenas leucocephala, Bahama Woodstar Calliphlox evelynae, Bahama Yellowthroat Geothlypis rostrata, Thick-billed Vireo Vireo crassirostris, Bahama Mockingbird Mimus gundlachii, Great Lizard-cuckoo Coccyzus merlini, and Greater Antillean Bullfinch Loxigilla violacea.

Best Times and Seasons for Viewing

The best season to view a Kirtland's Warbler is during the winter months. Other species, including the Bahama Woodstar, Bahama Yellowthroat, Bahama Mockingbird, and the Thick-billed Vireo, can be found year round.

The best time to view these birds would be during the morning or late afternoon hours.

Access Considerations and Directions

This IBA can be accessed by vehicular transportation. Persons with mobility impairments should have no difficulty moving around within the settllements.
