The Hermitage Estate

0 Thumbs Up! Give your thumbs up.

The Hermitage Estate in William's Town is a 970-acre cotton plantation, on the grounds of which stands the Cotton House, the oldest building in The Exumas. It was originally built in the 1750s by the Kelsall family, when the cotton industry thrived on the island for a few years, and it is still inhabited to this day. You can see a portion of the main house, an old Loyalist Tomb and partial structures of three slave quarters.

The salt pond located here is one of the finest natural salt lakes in The Exumas and is marked by a tall beacon on a high hill, which used to guide boats coming to pick up salt the Kelsalls once exported to Canada and the United States.
