Local Voices » Water - Recreation and Adventure

Water is an inescapable force in The Bahamas. It simultaneously separates and connects the people living within the spread of islands from the North to South. No matter where you start, you are hardly ever more than ten minutes from the coastline. Recreational activities that celebrate the water include sailing and fishing, snorkeling and diving, but you could simply just enjoy the ocean breeze. Every island's coastline cradles coral white or pink sand beaches.

Diving in the open water with sharks during a high noon feeding frenzy is about as crazy as you can get, unless you dive through the secret labyrinth of submarine caves. Prehistoric crocodiles and the indigenous Amerindians who first called the islands home are fossilized there.

The inland blue holes that perforate The Bahamas are entrances to ancient underwater cathedrals. Swimming at surface level is a noble quest in itself, for you must confront local folklore depicting blue hole monsters with octopus tentacles and shark heads. A blue hole swim is a Bahamas bucket list must.

“There is so much life to see from your seat on a boat. I know where the Spanish Wells nurse sharks go during the summer to mate and make babies. The island is quiet that time of the year, almost placid. Beachcombing can sooth the mind, but the most enjoyable activities on Spanish Wells involve going out in the boat: snorkeling, diving, and fishing.”

-Tweedie Sands, Spanish Wells Fishing Guide

“As a young boy growing up in The Exumas, my father would take me and my brothers camping and fishing on a Saturday. We would dive and shoot crawfish, and in the evening anchor by a nice calm beach on the south side to cook our fresh fish in the sand. We had to go in the mangroves and find dry buttonwood for grilling. To catch the fire you had to ball up the dry Silver Top palms. At night we would spread our blankets and pack inside the cabin of the boat and sleep. It was a memorable bonding experience, cruising through the cays with the guys.”
